BAKUCHIOL
History
Bakuchiol is derived from the seeds and leaves of the Psoralea corylifolia plant, also known as babchi or bakuchi, which has been used in traditional Ayurvedic, Chinese, and Korean medicine for centuries. In traditional medicine, bakuchi was primarily used to treat skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, and vitiligo.
Modern Discovery
Although bakuchiol has been used in traditional medicine for centuries, its skincare benefits gained scientific attention relatively recently. In 2014, a study published in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science compared the effects of bakuchiol and retinol on the skin. The study found that bakuchiol exhibited similar efficacy to retinol in improving skin texture, reducing fine lines and wrinkles, and stimulating collagen production but with fewer side effects such as irritation and sensitivity. While bakuchiol has shown promising results in early studies, research into its efficacy and mechanisms of action is ongoing. Scientists are exploring its potential applications in various skincare formulations and its synergistic effects with other skincare ingredients.
Benefits for Skincare
Anti-ageing: Bakuchiol has been shown to stimulate collagen production in the skin, which helps improve elasticity and firmness. This can reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, resulting in smoother, younger-looking skin.
Retinol-like effects: Bakuchiol has been dubbed a natural alternative to retinol due to its ability to improve skin texture and tone, reduce hyperpigmentation, and enhance overall skin radiance. However, unlike retinol, bakuchiol is generally well-tolerated by sensitive skin types and does not cause the same level of irritation or sun sensitivity.
Antioxidant properties: Bakuchiol is rich in antioxidants, which help protect the skin from environmental stressors such as pollution and UV radiation. By neutralising free radicals, bakuchiol helps prevent premature ageing and damage to the skin.
Anti-inflammatory: Bakuchiol exhibits anti-inflammatory properties, making it beneficial for soothing and calming irritated or inflamed skin. It can help reduce redness, swelling, and sensitivity, making it suitable for sensitive or acne-prone skin types.
Moisturising: Bakuchiol has moisturising properties that help hydrate the skin, improving overall skin texture and suppleness. It can help maintain the skin's natural moisture barrier, preventing dryness and promoting a healthy complexion.
