ANGELICA ROOT

History

"당귀 Dang Gui (Angelica Root)" means "to return duly" in English. Therefore, it is said that in ancient times, wives of fishermen, who often went on long voyages, carried Angelica root with them as a wish for their husbands' safe return. There is also a story that originated from wives putting Angelica root in their husbands' pockets when they went to war, wishing for their safe return.

Another interpretation is that it originated from the meaning "husband returns home," implying that it was a must-have medicine for brides going to their husband's home. During the Joseon Dynasty, angelica root sold well because Gisaeng, Korean geisha, believed that washing their face with water in which Angelica root had been soaked would improve their skin.
